Chapter Sixteen

Aqeara

I was barely dozing off, my dreams unable to form, when a steep rock of the ship threw me out of bed. I sat up and tried to steady myself.

My stomach turned with the slightest movement. I ran to the wooden bucket near my bed and emptied my stomach of the only food I had eaten all day. The wretched sounds coming from my throat were foreign. My thoughts raced. Was I dying? The ship rolled again, and I grabbed onto the bucket to steady myself.

“Hey, are you alright? You sounded hurt.” Dalton’s voice called out from behind my door.

The noise I made in response resembled that of a wounded animal. I was too dizzy to form a coherent sentence.

The door swung open, and Dalton walked in on me heaving again. With the odd way he had been acting lately, his presence frightened me. Had I been poisoned?

“It’s okay. You’re okay. There’s a nasty storm rolling in.” Dalton rubbed my back soothingly.

I tried not to think too much of the current situation—it was exceptionally embarrassing. Being comforted like this while I was weak and vulnerable, heaving up a disgusting mess.

“Look, I need to get back up to Barnes and help out. I’ll send someone else down. Deep breaths,” Dalton said in a calm voice.

I tried to relax and wiped my mouth with the back of my hand.

Dalton made no noise when he left. A glance up, and he was gone. My door was wide open. I started coughing when I tried to take a deep breath. My stomach flopped like a fish out of water. The ship went over another large wave. I held on to the bucket filled with my sick, desperately trying not to let it tip over.

Footsteps approached and from the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar pair of navy-blue boots.

“Oh dear, it looks like you have not gotten your sea legs yet. Not to worry! I have this for you.” I turned my head to look at the Doc approaching me.

The Doc sat down beside me and handed me two small objects. I stared at him in confusion. I had already rid myself of my sea legs and replaced them with human ones; that was the whole point of Salophine’s spell.

“Put these in your ears if you can manage. They can help with the imbalance of the ship. If you can stand, I recommend going up and looking out into the ocean. It may help with the nausea.” The Doc stood up and nearly toppled over with another harsh jerk of the ship.

My stomach rolled, but I did not get sick again. There was nothing left in my stomach to heave.

“I am feeling this way because of the ocean’s movements?” I asked as I looked down at the wax objects in my hand. This was what the men wore when they encountered sirens.

“Yes, it’s common to get sick when the ship rocks this drastically, especially during severe thunderstorms. You can probably stay up on the main deck for a little while before any lightning strikes.
